Iconic Marc Newson design has aged well and remains one of my favourite places to start a journey.

Overall Rating

One of the nicest lounges anywhere in the world and hard to fault. A thoroughly enjoyable place to start any journey.

Lounge Access

Traveling in Qantas First Class, Qantas Platinum / Platinum One Frequent Flyers, One World Emerald status. 1 guest per member.

No paid access.

Open from 5:00am until last QF flight.

Ambience

Luxurious, quiet, sophisticated

Design

The iconic Marc Newson design (see Sydney also) has stood the test of time and while no longer new, the qualities fittings have lasted well. Light and airy by virtue of the floor to ceiling windows although it can get quite hot at times even with the blinds deployed.

Service

Friendly Qantas service as always and everyone is made to feel welcome. Staff are attentive and fast when it comes to food and beverage service.

Food

Excellent Neil Perry designed menu with a good variety of a la carte options at any time of day depending on where your body clock is at. Food is freshly prepared to order by the team of chefs in the open kitchen and arrives promptly. Portions are not huge but ordering multiple dishes is neither problematic or time consuming.

Drinks

Proper Melbourne coffee and a good selection of cold Champagne kicks things off appropriately. Large variety of self serve options as well including filtered water taps.

Seating

Leather chairs and sofas are comfortable and plentiful. Aside from the sun, the best seats are along with window in the reclining armchairs. There are also separate booth sections for small grounds, desks and separate rooms that can be closed off for business discussions or families with small children.

Cleanliness

Always exceptionally clean and well maintained in my experience over the years.

Washrooms / Showers

Washrooms are private and spacious and shower facilities are available. Amenities like shaving kits used to be provided but presumably have been axed to save costs.

Amenities

The lounge offers a spa service for pre-flight facials, massages etc. that can be booked ahead or occasionally available on a walk-in basis if not busy.

Families

Families are welcome in the lounge and there are separate rooms that can be used with small children to provide some extra privacy without having to worry about disturbing other guests.

Flight Information

Flights are called in the lounge and displayed on the large flip-board.

Gate Access

Many long-haul flights depart from gates directly below the lounge so access is easy. Flights announcements should give you ample time to get to the gate if you depart promptly.

About Road Warrior ratings:

  • Ratings are based on first-hand experience in the lounge, usually multiple times.

  • Lounges are often updated regularly so some of the reviews may become out of date over time. Always check with the airline website for the latest information.

  • Star ratings are entirely subjective and based on relativities across many of the lounges I've visited around the world.

  • Always do your own research. Everyone's expectations and experiences are different so treat this review as one data point.

  • No stars means not applicable or my experience was insufficient to provide a rating.
